Katie’s story:

My name is Katie Barnard, I’m 32 and from Western Australia. I have just spent 2 days at your Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary doing the trek and spending time with the Elephants.

I would love to offer my time and skills for 3 days to help support the LEAF community project and the staff in the village. Elephants are my absolute favorite animal and any opportunity to help care for and support the elephants and your project would be a privilege.

I think LEAF is doing a wonderful thing with the sanctuary and id like to help with continual improvement, raising awareness of your sanctuary through social media and offer ideas for potential funding programs to help grow this great project.

Antje’s Story

I’m Antje, 28, originally from Germany but now living in the Netherlands. When I quit my job to visit Asia I knew immediately that I do not only want to travel but also do something good for the countries I visit. When I started my journey in Thailand I volunteered for 1 month at an elephant sanctuary which was hard work but also a lot of fun. When I heard about the L.E.A.F. project I decided to come visit and work here for a few days as well. Not only that elephants are my favorite animals and I therefore really care about them, I am also very enthusiastic about the project. I want to support its people with their daily tasks and also add something to the sanctuary – also using the experience I gained at the other center in Thailand. Having visited & spent 2 days in the sanctuary, meeting the elephants and trekking in the jungle I can’t wait to get back there and start working!

Jamie’s Story

My name is Jamie Hood, I’m English, I am 18 years old and am travelling around Southeast Asia for my gap year. I raised the money to come travelling myself working as a waiter so I can deal with long hours of work without rest and I have also worked on a building site before that as a labourer. I have been travelling since the beginning of March through Vietnam and now in Cambodia.
I haven’t done any volunteering work on my travels because I haven’t yet had the opportunity, but after the two day tour I did with LEAF I am really eager to help out with your organisation to help with environment & the community, and most of all the lifestyle of elephants at the sanctuary.
I have always been interested in conservation work and have previously taken part in it in South Africa where I was most fascinated by the African elephants and their way of living.
I’m happy to volunteer until the evening of the 24th April I would be excited to do whatever work is required of me.

Volunteers location

My name is Melissa Moore. I am 22 years old from Canada. I believe I would be a great addition to the LEAF volunteer team because of my interest in nature and animals. In school I studied science with a focus in earth science. I grew up near the mountains loving the outdoors. I spend my free time hiking and exploring nature. It is my first time in Cambodia, and I´ve had the pleasure of exploring many jungles throughout the country. I began to learn more about the area and the negative impact of deforestation on the animals and the surrounding communities. Ive always been obsessed with animals. Ive worked professionally with dogs for over a year. Getting to interact with the elephants during my tour was truly a dream come true. At first you are intimidated by their size, but it quickly become obvious how intelligent and social these beautiful animals are. I would be so grateful for the opportunity to offer my time to improve their habitat.

I did the LEAF two day tour yesterday and had a wonderful time. After speaking with the staff and learning about what the sanctuary is doing for the animals, local people and the environment, I became very interested in volunteering. The staff told me about what LEAF has accomplished in 2 years of operation, through educating locals, rehabilitating animals and, offering tours to educate others and collect donations to the cause. By educating the locals on how to co-exist with the environment, they move towards a more sustainable way of living, that will protect many species of plants and animals in the future. But the part that inspired me is the amount of potential they all believe this foundation has. And with more support, they hope to continue to improve the sanctuary so they can maximize their positive influence on the environment and its inhabitants. I want to offer my time and effort to this sanctuary so that it can continue to pursue its full potential.

Florian’s Story

Please let me explain in a few sentences why I chose to become a short-term conservation volunteer.

I am an Environmental Engineer and I was working for a small hydropower consultancy in the UK for the last 4 years. I want to go back to my home country, Austria, but before settling down there I decided to travel around Southeast Asia for a few months.

I started off in Ho Chi Minh City, where I volunteered for 2 weeks helping in a food outreach programme for the poor. After that I went to Cambodia and did a diving course on Koh Rong Samloem. Based on this course I was able to do 2 weeks of volunteering with a marine conservation NGO there. My activities included lookinf after the coral nursery and cleaning beaches and reefs from rubbish. Since then I have been travelling around Cambodia and I really like this country.

Today I have visited the Mondulkiri Elephant Sanctuary: I was amazed by the elephants and by what LEAF does for the environment and the local community: I was speaking to the volunteers there and decided to join as a short-term volunteer for several days.

I enjoy gardening, care for the environment (I often pick up litter) and as a hydropower engineer I am obviously interested in the micro-hydro schemes at the sanctuary.

Je passe un mois au Cambodge pour visiter le pays.

Je souhaite favoriser l’ecotourisme, et apres avoir visituer le sanctuaire, j’ai envie apporter mon aide durant quelques jours, a votre projet.

J’espere que cette premiere experience de volontariat, m’incitera a m investir plus longtemps dans de tels projets.

Le probleme de la deforestation me touche particulierement et je serai ravie de participer au programme de replantation d’arbres.

I’m visited Cambodia for 4 weeks, and during this time, I would be happy to spent time not only for visiting some touristics sites, but I would enjoy to give time to be usefull for charity like yours.

I’m very concerned about environnement, and the animal’s destiny, I’m vegetarian, and with willingness, I’m sure that humanity could prove that they can do better than they did.

I’m very sad about deforestation and the progress disappearing of monkeys and elephants.

For all of these reasons, I find myself making sens to participate for few days to your association. Not more unfortunately because my travel is too short, but may be for an other trip !

Hello!

My name is Claudia. I am from Germany. I work in the area of environmental protection. As I was a kid I had dreamed of living in the jungle one time. Today I am still fascinated about the jungle. So I did the trekking tour with L.E.A.F.

During the jungle trekking tour I have seen, not just the beauty, but also the alarming level of deforeststation. It does mean a loss of habitat and food – animals can become vulnerable.

L.E.A.F. is taking care of the nature and wildlife in a way I like to support. That is the reason I have just started to volunteer for them. I want to help with the house garden and the environmental education work.

Now while I am staying at the sancutary I  am surrounded of jungle- a dream becomes true, and also I am working with a great team of friendly careing people. Thanks a lot 🙂
